Felt Doll Art Activity Video Guide

Mr. Jai is your virtual instructor and he shows you how to create a felt doll inspired by designer Patrick Kelly.

Patrick Kelly was the first American designer to be admitted into the prestigious fashion organization, the "French Federation of Fashion and Ready-to-Wear Couturiers and Fashion Designers," in 1988.

Instruction Guide

Prepare Your Thread

  1. Take the thread and insert it into the eye (hole) of the needle.
  2. Place the ends of the thread together and tie a knot as close to the ends of the thread as possible.

Sewing the Doll

  1. Insert the needle into one of the holes and pull. We recommend inserting from the inside of the doll, and pushing through to the outside.
  2. Insert the needle into the next hole and push through the doll to the other side.
  3. Continue to the next hole.
  4. Work your way around the perimeter of the doll. This is called a "running stitch."
  5. Leave an opening for the stuffing
  6. Stuff the doll to your satisfaction.
  7. Finish sewing the doll.
  8. When complete, tie a knot around the thread. Get as close to the doll as possible.

Creating a Face

  1. Glue the googly eyes to the face. Allow time for it to dry.
  2. Draw on a mouth to complete the face.

Prepare the Clothes

  1. Cut out the clothing pattern pieces of your choice.
  2. Place it on a square sheet of felt and cut it out.

Patrick Kelly's Overalls

  1. Cut one overall, two shoulder straps, and the front pocket in one felt color sheet.
  2. Cut the t-shirt in a contrasting felt color sheet.
  3. Place the straps on the overall and secure with glue.
  4. Place the buttons on the straps according to the picture above. Glue in place.
  5. Place the completed overalls on top of the shirt and glue in place. Allow time for it to dry.
  6. Place on side of the velcro dot on the back of the shirt.
  7. Place the other side of the velcro dot on the front of the doll.

Patrick Kelly's Cap

  1.  Cut the larger cap pattern piece in the same felt color sheet as the overalls.
  2. Cut the smaller cap piece in the contrasting color sheet.
  3. Glue the smaller cap piece on top of the larger cap piece. Allow time for it to dry.
  4. Cut a velcro dot in half.
  5. Place one side of the velcro dot on the back of the cap.
  6. Place the other side of the dot on the front of the doll's head.

Ann Lowe's Dress

  1. Cut the dress pattern piece out of one felt color sheet.
  2. Place one side of the velcro dot on the back of the dress.
  3. Place the other side of the velcro dot on the front of the doll's body.
  4. Cut the t-shirt in a contrasting felt color.
  5. Place the straps on the overall and secure with glue.
  6. Place the buttons on the straps according to the picture above. Glue in place.
