Fashion Illustration Challenge

2025 Black History Month Challenge

The influence of Black fashion designers is undeniable. Whether you are a student looking for something to add to your art portfolio or an avid artist ready to show off your illustration skills, we challenge you to learn about the history of fashion design through the eyes of Black designers and their memorable creations.

Enter your illustration into the 2025 Black History Month Fashion Illustration Challenge for a chance to have your illustration featured on national TV.

No purchase necessary. Challenge is open to legal residents of the United States. Illustrations completed by hand and digitally will be considered. The use of AI in the completion of illustrations is strictly prohibited. Participants under the age of 18 must have approval from their parent/legal guardian to participate in the challenge.

Choose Your Prompt

You can pick between six different prompts that feature both womenswear and menswear looks. The Featured designers are:

  • Ann Lowe - womenswear; evening wear
  • Ozwald Boateng - menswear; suiting
  • Patrick Kelly - womenswear
  • Grace Wales Bonner - menswear
  • Stephen Burrows - womenswear; sportswear
  • Zelda Wynn Valdes - womenswear; costume evening wear

Each prompt describes a look from the designer and gives you some behind the scenes knowledge to help you in the creative process.

Remember these tips

We want to see your signature illustration style! Here’s some tips to help you along the way:

  1.  Trust Your Instincts:  Your first idea is often the most authentic. Don't overthink it.
  2. Experiment Fearlessly:  This is a chance to play! Try different techniques.
  3. Focus on the Prompt, Not the Designer's Existing Work (Too Much):  While researching the designer is important, don't get too caught up in replicating the existing design.  The prompt is the key.  Let the prompt inspire your unique interpretation of the designer's overall aesthetic and philosophy.
  4. Embrace Imperfection:  Perfectionism can stifle creativity.  Don't be afraid to make "mistakes"—sometimes, the most interesting discoveries come from them.
  5. Step Away and Reflect:  When you're feeling stuck or unsure, take a break.  Returning with fresh eyes can make a world of difference.

Don’t forget…

  1. Research, but Interpret:  Learn about the designer's background, inspirations, and design philosophy.  Then, let that information inform your illustration, rather than just copying their existing garments.
  2. Consider the Designer's Impact: Reflect on the designer's contributions to fashion and culture.  How can you express that through your unique visual language?
  3. Celebrate Individuality: Just as these designers forged their own paths, you should forge yours.  Use this challenge as an opportunity to celebrate both their individuality and your own.
